‘Promoting Quality, Traditional Chiropractic Care in a Non-Traditional Setting’

The power that made the body is what heals the body, and it does this through the nervous system from above down and inside out..

This chiropractic ‘Big Idea‘ has been a central tenet in Dr. Daniel Middleton’s chiropractic philosophy since starting his first practice over 25 years ago.

A chiropractor and martial artist, Dr. Middleton, understands how health and fitness work together, and why martial arts and healing arts (e.g. acupuncture and acupressure, herbal remedies, and physical modalities, such as massage and bone setting) have traditionally gone hand in hand.

In fact, it was Dr. Middleton’s introduction to Korean bone setting  as a young black belt that first sparked an interest in the spine’s relationship to health and wellness… and it was this aspect of his Kuk Sool training that inspired him to further his education as a chiropractor.

Having attended the University of South Carolina as an undergrad, Dr. Middleton decided in 1987 to go back to school to study chiropractic, graduating from Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in the  spring of 1991, then passing his State and National Boards, and opening his first practice in Greenville, SC later that same year, at the same time continuing to actively train and teach Kuk Sool Won, two central aspects of his life that have continued along parallel paths.

You can think of chiropractic at Kuk Sool Won Upstate as ‘traditional chiropractic in a ‘non-traditional’ setting.’

By that we mean that the chiropractic care that you will receive with us is the same care you would receive at a ‘traditional’ chiropractic office: the same new patient procedures, the same level of care and expertise, and the same types of adjustments… backed by Dr. Middleton’s 25 years of clinical experience, specializing in low-force, gentle adjusting techniques without the use of expensive adjunctive therapies in order to keep our fees as reasonable as possible, with the understanding that chiropractic can only be effective if it is first made affordable.

This is the same practice philosophy Dr. Middleton has embraced for decades.

The short answer is No. Since we are primarily a wellness practice most patients do not require x-rays, and this is one of the ways that we keep our fees affordable. We understand that many chiropractors take x-rays on every patient — sometimes even requiring follow up x-rays — but our philosophy is different. While there is a benefit to radiographs, in most cases (barring a fall, accident, injury, or some disease processes) our adjusting techniques are such that we have found that x-rays, while certainly helpful, are really not necessary, and Dr, Middleton will be happy to discuss his philosophy on this with you.

With that being said, remember that our primary consideration is your safety, and if we determine through your case history and examination that you do require x-rays due to an accident or disease history (osteoporosis, certain types of cancers, etc.), we work locally with Anderson Radiology to provide those x-rays as affordably as possible (their fees are very affordable and may be covered by your insurance).

The bottom line is x-rays are a trade-off: some limited exposure to radiation for information… and in most cases we feel that we can get that information through our normal chiropractic examination and evaluation.

Dr. Middleton has been adjusting patients of all ages for over 25 years (his youngest patient only four days old and his oldest in his eighties) and is able to adapt his technique for the patient’s optimal comfort.

He is a manual adjuster and performs nearly all adjustments by hand, primarily using gentle and specific Thompson (drop table) and Gonstead (seated cervical) adjustments, as well as some Diversified techniques he has adopted over many years of practice. Each patient’s needs will be slightly different and we will go over our procedures with you to determine what type of ‘adjusting package’ works best for you and which types of adjusting techniques you are most comfortable with.

We use an ‘open bay area ‘ concept with our adjusting so, while you will be separated marginally from other patients by a low wall, you may be seen with other patients (similar to The Joint’s layout if you have ever been adjusted there). This reflects Dr. Middleton’s philosophy that chiropractic isn’t ‘medicine,’ and it should be ‘a lot more like going to a gym than going to the doctor.’

However, if you feel that you need to discuss your condition privately, we will be happy to schedule a time for you to do so.

No, chiropractic should not ‘hurt,’ and most patients actually look forward to their adjustment and the relief and freedom of movement that comes as a result.

Remember, though, that chiropractic is a physical discipline and our philosophy is to ‘move bones’ to remove interference and free up your body’s natural mobility so there will be some degree of twisting and pressing as we move those bones ‘back in place.’ Initially there may be some natural resistance from a body that has been out of alignment, perhaps for years, so we will typically start out very low force and then gradually increase the intensity of the adjustment as you become more relaxed.

Every patient is different, and our goal is to make your chiropractic experience as gentle and pleasant as possible.

This is really one of the most common misconceptions about chiropractic, and no, you don’t ‘have’ to keep coming back.

The thing to remember, however, is that chiropractic isn’t a pill, it’s a process, and if you have a problem that has been there for years it just doesn’t make sense that a single adjustment will correct it. The example we like to use is that the processes that your body has gone through to get where you are today — daily movement, strains, and stresses — are like a road map, and if it takes you two hours to drive to Atlanta (for instance), it’s going to take you a little while to get back.

Going back to our philosophy that ‘chiropractic is more like going to the gym than going to the doctor,’ the benefits you get from going to the gym are from consistency. You can go to the gym one day and work out for a couple of hours and feel pretty pumped up, but if you don’t go back you can’t expect the results to last any time at all.

Chiropractic is no different, and our goal is to ‘move the bones and train the muscles’ through regular and consistent chiropractic adjustments to maintain your body at its most optimal level of spinal health, and in order to do this you should determine, when considering care, to at least give chiropractic a chance. To simply ‘try’ chiropractic by getting one or two adjustments is like taking one vitamin or doing a single push-up… you’re not going to get the results you’re looking for.

Chiropractic isn’t an event, it’s a process, and if you want to ‘give chiropractic a try,’ determine from the outset to dedicate yourself to at least 5-10 visits. In return, our promise to you is to give you the best care possible and to provide that care to you as affordably as possible.

But to the original question, ‘Do I have to keep coming back’ once I start? No, but most people choose to continue a regular chiropractic schedule once they recognize the many benefits chiropractic care can bring to their lives.

No, and this is one of the greatest benefits of chiropractic! Not only is chiropractic itself affordable, numerous studies have shown that people under regular chiropractic care (generally defined as once-a-month or more) have lower overall medical costs over time than the national average. The reason for this is that chiropractic patients use chiropractic as part of an overall proactive health care plan, understanding that it’s a lot easier to stay well than to get well.

And it’s also a lot less expensive!

Think about your car. If you take care of it with regular maintenance (oil change, tire rotation, etc.) it costs pennies in comparison to the expense of a catastrophic breakdown resulting from negligence that can literally run into the thousands of dollars!

Why would you think that your body, its complex nervous system, its eleven interconnected organ systems, and its (literally) billions of cells, would be any different?

In addition, since we are a maintenance/wellness, adjusting only and without expensive radiographic equipment and expensive therapies, we are able to pass these savings on to our patients.

In fact, as you can see below, well are able to offer quality, traditional chiropractic care — back by over 25 years of clinical experience — for as little as $15per visit!
